10.15 - Official Examination Readiness Checklist
Module: Universal Review and Mock Examinations
Purpose: Final go/no-go checklist before scheduling and taking the official EPA Section 608 Universal certification examination
Project readiness standard: At least 22/25 in Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III on two separate closed-book cumulative attempts, with no unresolvedP1errors
Provider-information review basis: Current project information verified August 14, 2026
Important: EPA requirements and certifying-provider procedures are different. Confirm the selected provider’s current instructions immediately before the official examination.
How to Use This Checklist
Complete this file after:
- Finishing the Module 10 review sheets.
- Completing Universal Mock Examination 1.
- Correcting all Mock 1 errors through Section 10.10.
- Completing Universal Mock Examination 2.
- Correcting remaining errors.
- Completing targeted remediation from Section 10.13 when needed.
Do not mark an item complete because it was reviewed once.
Mark it complete only when the requirement has actually been satisfied.
Use:
[ ] = NOT YET CONFIRMED
[x] = CONFIRMED
The official Universal examination should be scheduled only when all hard-stop readiness items are complete.
Part 1 - Universal Knowledge Readiness
1.1 Mock Examination Scores
Record the results from the two independent Universal mock examinations.
| Section | Mock 1 Score | Mock 2 Score | Target Met on Both? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | ___ / 25 | ___ / 25 | [ ] Yes |
| Type I | ___ / 25 | ___ / 25 | [ ] Yes |
| Type II | ___ / 25 | ___ / 25 | [ ] Yes |
| Type III | ___ / 25 | ___ / 25 | [ ] Yes |
Required Project Target
22 / 25 OR HIGHER
IN EACH SECTION
ON BOTH MOCK EXAMINATIONS
- Core reached at least 22/25 on both independent mock examinations.
- Type I reached at least 22/25 on both independent mock examinations.
- Type II reached at least 22/25 on both independent mock examinations.
- Type III reached at least 22/25 on both independent mock examinations.
- Both mocks were completed closed book.
- Both mocks were completed without internet searching or outside assistance.
- The two mocks were taken as independent attempts rather than immediately after memorizing the answer files.
- Timing was realistic for the selected provider’s current Universal examination format.
Hard stop: A high total score does not compensate for a weak section. If any section remains below the project target, continue remediation before taking the official Universal examination.
1.2 Error-Log Closure
Use 10.10 - Error Analysis and Remediation.md.
- Every incorrect Mock 1 question was reviewed.
- Every incorrect Mock 2 question was reviewed.
- Every guessed or low-confidence answer was reviewed even when the selected answer happened to be correct.
- Every error has a known cause.
- Every
P1safety or regulatory error has been corrected. - There are zero unresolved
P1errors. - Repeated
P2errors have been corrected and retested. - No unresolved error remains because of an outdated or legacy rule.
- No unresolved error remains because of confusion among pressure units.
- No unresolved error remains because of mixing Type I, Type II, and Type III rules.
- No unresolved error remains because of mixing Section 608 and Section 609 requirements.
- The learner can explain the corrected rule or principle without looking at the answer key.
Open-Error Summary
| Error Type | Open Count |
|---|---|
P1 | ___ |
P2 | ___ |
P3 | ___ |
| Correct guesses still unresolved | ___ |
| Legacy/outdated-source errors still unresolved | ___ |
For official-exam readiness:
OPEN P1 ERRORS = 0
1.3 Remediation Completion
If Section 10.13 was needed:
- Weak topics were selected from the actual error log rather than chosen randomly.
- New remediation questions were answered closed book.
- Missed remediation questions were corrected.
- The weak concept was retested with a fresh question.
- The topic was closed only after the learner could state the controlling rule or physical reason without notes.
If Section 10.13 was not needed:
- Mock 1 and Mock 2 already demonstrated the project readiness standard in all four sections.
Part 2 - Final Knowledge Recall Check
Before the official examination, confirm that the following can be recalled quickly without searching the course.
2.1 Core
- I can explain the purpose of Section 608 and the venting prohibition.

- I know that November 15, 1993 refers to the recovery/recycling equipment, not the appliance.
- I can distinguish recovery with a functional compressor from recovery with a failed compressor.
- I know the high-side versus high-and-low-side access concepts taught for Type I recovery.
- I can distinguish a process stub from a piercing or solderless access fitting.
- I understand the final-disposal recover-or-verify responsibility.
2.3 Type II
- I can classify medium-, high-, and very-high-pressure refrigerants using the current pressure boundaries.
- I can distinguish the
15 lb,50 lb, and200 lbthresholds. - I can apply the current Type II evacuation table.
- I understand liquid-first recovery where practical and vapor completion.

- I know that the normal Type III Table 1 endpoint is 25 mm Hg absolute.
- I can distinguish a refrigerant monitor from an oxygen monitor.
- I know that a machinery room is not automatically an OSHA confined space.
Part 3 - High-Priority Numerical Verification
The following values are especially vulnerable to confusion.
Do not merely recognize the number. Be able to state:
NUMBER
+
CONCEPT
+
CONDITION
+
UNIT
3.1 Charge and Classification Values
- 5 lb or less — only one part of the complete small-appliance definition.
- Greater than 15 lb full charge — ordinary system-dependent recovery equipment restriction unless the permanent pump-out exception applies.
- 50 lb or more — current Section 608 ODS leak-repair applicability threshold for qualifying appliances.
- 200 lb — charge boundary affecting several Type II evacuation-table rows.
- 45 / 170 / 355 psia at 104°F — refrigerant pressure-classification boundaries / criterion.
3.2 Type I Values
- 80% — correct Type I recovery requirement under the applicable conditions.
- 90% — post-November 15, 1993 recovery equipment with a functional appliance compressor.
- 4 in. Hg vacuum — Type I alternative endpoint.
- November 15, 1993 — recovery/recycling-equipment date boundary.
3.3 Type II and Type III Evacuation Values
For recovery equipment manufactured on or after November 15, 1993:
- Very-high-pressure appliance → 0 in. Hg vacuum.
- High-pressure appliance under 200 lb → 0 in. Hg vacuum.
- High-pressure appliance 200 lb or more → 10 in. Hg vacuum.
- Medium-pressure appliance under 200 lb → 10 in. Hg vacuum.
- Medium-pressure appliance 200 lb or more → 15 in. Hg vacuum.
- Low-pressure appliance → 25 mm Hg absolute.
For pre-November 15, 1993 recovery equipment:
- I have reviewed the applicable
0 / 4 / 25 mm Hg absoluterequirements in the current Table 1.
3.4 Current Section 608 ODS Leak-Repair Values
- Industrial process refrigeration → 30%.
- Commercial refrigeration → 20%.
- Comfort cooling → 10%.
- Other qualifying appliances → 10%.
- I will not substitute historical
35% / 15%values when a question asks for the current rule.
3.5 Major Repair and Special Pressure Values
- More than 4 in² of flow area open for more than 15 minutes is part of the major-repair definition.
- Qualifying non-major / leaking-section pressure concept → no higher than 0 psig when all regulatory conditions are satisfied.
- Current special oil-change opening provision → no higher than 5 psig.
3.6 Type III Examination-Preparation Values
These must remain separated from universal equipment-design ratings.
- 10 psig — low-pressure leak-test examination maximum used in this course.
- 10 psig — traditional low-pressure recovery-unit high-pressure cutout examination value.
- 15 psig — traditional low-pressure recovery-vessel rupture-disc examination value.
- 130°F — traditional Type III oil-heating examination value.
- 25 mm Hg absolute — current normal low-pressure Table 1 endpoint.
Hard stop: If any value above is being recalled without its condition or unit, review
10.2 - High-Priority Numbers and Thresholds.mdbefore the official examination.

5.2 SkillCat Example - Use Only If SkillCat Is the Selected Provider
Current public information from SkillCat lists:
Universal
→ 100 questions
→ 25 Core + 25 Type I + 25 Type II + 25 Type III
→ 2 hours
→ closed book
→ proctored
The same source also lists:
4 attempts
and:
approximately 4-hour wait between attempts
with a published typical proctor-review period of approximately:
1–2 days
However, provider policies can change.
In addition, current public materials from SkillCat use inconsistent wording about the passing-score method.
Therefore, if SkillCat is selected:
- I opened the current SkillCat examination instructions.
- I confirmed the current Universal time limit.
- I confirmed the current attempt limit.
- I confirmed the current retake wait.
- I confirmed the current proctoring rules.
- I confirmed the current passing / section-credit method inside the current SkillCat system.
- I will follow the current in-app examination agreement rather than an older public description.
The values above are provider-specific information, not permanent EPA regulatory requirements.
Part 6 - Identification and Account Preparation
- My name in the testing account matches the identification I will use.
- I have the type of identification required by the provider.
- The identification is current and readable.
- The provider has accepted any required identity-verification step.
- I know the login email / username for the testing account.
- I know the password or have verified account access.
- Multi-factor authentication, if required, has been tested.
- I will not wait until the scheduled examination time to discover an account-access problem.
Record

- I understand that violating examination-security rules can invalidate the attempt.
Part 10 - Examination Scheduling and Retake Buffer
Do not schedule the first official attempt so close to an employment, graduation, course, or other deadline that one technical problem or one failed attempt eliminates the possibility of a retake.
10.1 Scheduling Record
Official certification needed by: ____________________________
Planned first examination date: _____________________________
Planned first examination time: _____________________________
Current provider retake waiting period: ______________________
Current expected result / proctor-review time: _______________
Latest practical retake date: _______________________________
Scheduling Checklist
- The first examination is scheduled early enough to allow at least one retake if needed.
- The schedule includes the provider’s current retake waiting period.
- The schedule includes any provider review / approval time before a result becomes final.
- The schedule includes time for focused remediation if the first attempt is unsuccessful.
- The schedule does not depend on receiving an immediate result when the provider states review may take longer.
- I have not scheduled the examination immediately after an exhausting workday, overnight shift, or other condition likely to impair performance.
There is no project-wide fixed number of days that is correct for every provider and every deadline. Build the schedule from the current provider retake and review rules plus a reasonable remediation buffer.
Part 11 - Digital Credential and Certification Record
Before testing, know what will happen after a successful result.
- I know whether the provider issues a digital certificate, digital card, physical card, or combination.
- I know where the credential will appear.
- I know whether a provider review must finish before the credential is issued.
- I know whether a physical card requires a separate request or fee.
- I know how to contact the provider if the credential does not appear.
- I will save the certificate number immediately after certification.
- I will save the digital certificate in more than one secure location.
- I will record the issuing certifying organization.
- I will record the examination / certification date.
- I will provide a copy to an employer or school if required.

→ CHECK THE UNIT
→ WATCH FOR NOT / EXCEPT / FIRST / MAXIMUM / MINIMUM
→ ELIMINATE DISTRACTORS
→ SELECT ONE BEST ANSWER
Do not change an answer merely because of nervousness.
Change it when a specific technical, regulatory, numerical, or reading reason shows the original choice was incorrect.
