10.10 - Error Analysis and Remediation
Module: Universal Review and Mock Examinations
Purpose: Convert Mock Examination errors and low-confidence answers into targeted remediation before the second independent Universal mock examination
Readiness standard: At least 22/25 in Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III on two separate closed-book cumulative attempts, with no unresolved critical safety misconception or current-regulation threshold error
1. Use the Mock Exams as Four Separate Tests
A Universal mock examination contains 100 questions, but readiness is evaluated in four 25-question sections.
| Section | Mock 1 | Target | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | ___ / 25 | 22 / 25 | |
| Type I | ___ / 25 | 22 / 25 | |
| Type II | ___ / 25 | 22 / 25 | |
| Type III | ___ / 25 | 22 / 25 | |
| Total | ___ / 100 | — |
A high total does not cancel a weak section.
2. What Must Be Logged
Enter an error record for:
- Every incorrect answer.
- Every
C0answer, even if correct. - Every
C1answer, even if correct. - Any
C2answer involving a current regulatory number, safety rule, or recovery/evacuation requirement when the reasoning was uncertain. - Any answer changed only because another choice “looked better” without a specific technical reason.
A correct guess is not mastery.
3. Confidence Codes
| Code | Meaning | Required Action |
|---|---|---|
C3 | Certain and can explain the controlling reason | Normal review |
C2 | Probably correct but not fully certain | Review concept |
C1 | Guess between two or more choices | Log and remediate |
C0 | No reliable basis for answer | High-priority knowledge gap |
4. Error Categories
| Code | Category | Typical Cause |
|---|---|---|
DEF | Definition or terminology | Similar terms confused |
CLS | Appliance or certification classification | Wrong equipment type or pressure category |
REG | Regulation, date, threshold, or exception | Current rule not known or condition omitted |
LEG | Historical/outdated-rule error | Older value applied as current |
PRO | Procedure or sequence | Wrong service step, order, or recovery method |
SAF | Safety, cylinder, or equipment-use error | Hazard or safe practice misunderstood |
CAL | Calculation, units, or table reading | Arithmetic, units, P-T data, or pressure scale misused |
READ | Question-reading error | Missed not, except, minimum, maximum, or other controlling word |
DIST | Distractor-selection error | Selected a true statement that did not answer the stem |
REC | Recall failure | Previously studied concept could not be retrieved |
SRC | Source-verification problem | Rule or number was not verified against current authority |
GUE | Correct guess / low-confidence answer | Correct letter without reliable reasoning |
Use one primary code. Add a short secondary note if another factor contributed.
5. Error Priority
| Priority | Meaning | Examples | Correction Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
P1 | Immediate correction required | Venting, recovery/evacuation rule, safety hazard, current numerical threshold | Same day |
P2 | Important recurring concept | Certification type, refrigerant classification, recovery sequence | Within 1 day |
P3 | Isolated lower-frequency issue | Minor terminology or uncommon detail | Within 3 days |
Repeated P2 errors become P1.
6. Individual Error Record
Copy one record for every missed, guessed, or unresolved question.

8. Mock 1 Weak-Area Map
After scoring Mock 1, list missed or uncertain question numbers by domain. Do not simply count errors; identify the repeated concept behind them.
Core
| Domain | Missed / Uncertain Questions | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental effects, ozone, refrigerant families | ||
| Clean Air Act, Montreal Protocol, venting, certification | ||
| Recover / recycle / reclaim, recovery equipment | ||
| Cylinders, nitrogen, PPE, safety | ||
| Refrigeration cycle, gauges, pressure, P-T reasoning | ||
| Evacuation, dehydration, disposal / recordkeeping |
Type I
| Domain | Missed / Uncertain Questions | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Small-appliance definition and classification | ||
| 80% / 90% / 4 in. Hg requirements | ||
| Functional-compressor recovery | ||
| Failed-compressor recovery / access | ||
| Process stubs and temporary access fittings | ||
| Disposal / prior-recovery verification |
Type II
| Domain | Missed / Uncertain Questions | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure categories and equipment scope | ||
| Leak detection and current leak-repair rules | ||
| Recovery preparation / liquid-first recovery | ||
| Evacuation table and 15 / 50 / 200-lb distinctions | ||
| Major / non-major / leaking-system provisions | ||
| Compressor and very-high-pressure safety |
Type III
| Domain | Missed / Uncertain Questions | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Low-pressure fundamentals / inward leakage | ||
| Purge unit / noncondensables | ||
| Leak testing and pressure limits | ||
| Liquid-first recovery / freeze prevention | ||
| Refrigerant in oil / oil service | ||
| Vapor-first charging / evaporator charging valve | ||
| 25 mm Hg absolute / special opening rules | ||
| Machinery-room and water-side safety |
9. Remediation Intensity
Use the error pattern to decide how much additional practice is needed.
| Result in One Domain | Recommended Action |
|---|---|
| 0–1 error and no low-confidence answers | Brief retrieval review; avoid unnecessary drilling |
2 errors or repeated C1 answers | Review the controlling lesson, then complete a short fresh question set |
| 3+ errors | Targeted remediation before another full mock |
Any P1 error | Correct immediately, explain the rule from memory, and retest with a fresh scenario |
| Any current-rule error caused by an old value | Record as LEG or SRC, verify the current rule, and remove the old value from active memorization |
10. Using the Optional Remediation Examination
10.13 - Optional Remediation Examination.md is a 50-question fresh bank intended for selective use after the error analysis.
- If Core is weak, complete the Core remediation section.
- If one Type section is weak, complete that section first.
- If several sections are below target, complete all 50 questions.
- Do not repeat mastered domains simply to inflate a score.
- Treat every missed or guessed remediation question as a new error-log entry.
11. Gate Before Mock Examination 2
Do not use Mock Examination 2 immediately after reading the Mock 1 answers.
Proceed to Mock 2 only when:
- All
P1errors from Mock 1 are corrected. - Current-rule values that were missed can be stated with their controlling conditions.
- The weakest section has been retested with fresh questions.
- Corrected concepts can be explained without looking at the answer key.
- At least one spaced review has occurred after the initial correction.
This preserves Mock 2 as an independent readiness measure rather than a short-term memory test.
12. Mock 2 Score and Final Comparison
| Section | Mock 1 | Mock 2 | Target on Both? | Open P1 Errors |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core | ___ / 25 | ___ / 25 | Yes / No | |
| Type I | ___ / 25 | ___ / 25 | Yes / No | |
| Type II | ___ / 25 | ___ / 25 | Yes / No | |
| Type III | ___ / 25 | ___ / 25 | Yes / No |
Final Readiness Questions
- Can I explain every current recovery/evacuation number with the condition that controls it?
- Can I distinguish Type I, Type II, Type III, MVAC, and MVAC-like equipment quickly?
- Can I identify whether a pressure is gauge, absolute, or vacuum referenced to atmosphere?
- Can I explain why a wrong distractor is wrong rather than only recall the correct letter?
- Do I have any unresolved safety or venting misconception?
- Did any outdated rule influence my answers?
